Hot Wells of the Future: Repurposing Oil and Gas Wells into Geothermal

A considerable amount of current energy is needed for heating and cooling residential and commercial buildings worldwide; thus, substantial gas emissions are produced when polluting energy sources are used. Moreover, oil and gas wells that are no longer producing create additional stress on O&G companies as they require enormous efforts and resources to plug them. Repurposing inactive wells into geothermal is a valuable proposition in the energy transition. This session will invite papers focused on repurposing oil and gas wells into either direct geothermal use or electricity. Additional focus will be on tecno-economical and operational aspects of repurposing technology.
